We already know that Sony contributed to the development of The Callisto Protocol, but the extent of its support may surprise you. Images of the credits – posted on ResetEra – reveal that around 150 employees from the platform holder’s Visual Arts Services Group and Malaysian team aided developer Striking Distance Studios on the project.
PlayStation often supports the creation of third-party titles by loaning out its state-of-the-art motion capture studios, and assisting on things like audio mixing and cinematics. But this looks like one of its biggest assignments on a non-first-party game to date, with the aforementioned 150 employees credited as contributing to the title.
Sony does have marketing rights to the release, but hasn’t signed it as a timed console exclusive, so it’ll launch on most major systems later this week. Of course, it will have been paid for its assistance, and based on what we’ve played of The Callisto Protocol thus far, you can certainly see how PlayStation’s support has elevated the entire experience – the cinematics specifically are stunning!

I got my copy early today and I've played for about an hour so far, so I haven't seen a lot obviously but I am sensing this will be a game I could have done without. To my surprise, it isn't nearly as polished as I expected it to be. But that's only a first impression of course and could totally change.
@dschons Is there a game that you couldn't have done without?
@Hindenburg Yes.

@dschons How polished it feels is definitely a concern of mine since the review embargo lifts the moment the game goes live. Is it buggy or are there any framerate issues?
@RBMango I didn't encounter anything major in terms of bugs but it feels like this game is a little rough around the edges from a technical perspective in general. Graphics are decent, the fire animations are hilarious though. I haven't had any major bugs but definitely some enemies clipping into walls and things like that. It has a bit of a "budget feel" in that regard I'd say. But I am hoping that the story and the gameplay will make up for it. This is most likely a me-issue since I avoided most publications of the game because I didn't want to get spoiled. Pretty sure some of my complaints have been obvious in trailers already. One death animation looked like a late PS2 game, lol. Dualsense implementation is awesome so far though.
Edit: The 20 GB D1 patch was already installed when I wrote the comment.
From what I understand, @dschons, there is something in the order of a 20g+ day one patch, which might sort some of the issues the game apparently has, and also give it an extra polish...
@SlySnake0407 Day one patch is already there (around 20 GB) and I had it installed.
@RBMango it's not reliable advice he's playing a 20gb+ unpatched version of the game so, what's he is playing won't be what you or I will be,
@Uromastryx It was patched. D1 patches are usually already in place beforehand.
A lot of times, the first hour is the last thing done so the least polished. Days Gone was a good example of that. They completely reworked the intro late and it showed. It definitely wasn't indicative of the polish the rest of the game had. But then again, this is the studios first game so you rarely get perfection out the gate. I'm definitely waiting for reviews on this one.
@get2sammyb when are reviews coming?
its rarely a good sign when held back
@mvhess This was definitely true for me in Days Gone, I agree. My opinion is, as I said, just a first impression of the first hour with the game. I might end up totally loving the game despite it not feeling as AAA as I hoped it would.
@dschons
Been playing through it myself, and glad to see im not crazy. Its by no means a bad game but it doesn't feel as good or smooth as the trailers made it seem, or the team hyped it up to be. Also may just be me but some animation feels pretty.. Janky? I guess.
But its definitely gonna scratch the horror-itch for some people.
@dschons the polish (lack of) is what’s had me concerned since the first gameplay trailer..had obvious framerate dips. How’s the framerate in the finished game?
@stvevan Still under embargo, I'm afraid. We will have a review this week, though!
@Bleachedsmiles I didn't see dips but I wouldn't be able to tell you if it was a smooth 60 experience. It was certainly playable but if someone told me it was a constant 50 fps, I would believe it, lol. Maybe I'll get the chance to play it a bit more today and come back to you, I didn't pay too much attention to it. Only thing I can say that the fidelity mode is not a nice experience at all.
@dschons that’s a shame…from the trailers it was one of the standout (visually) games shown this summer. Hopefully there’s still a good game in there. 👍
Cool.Sony should buy striking distance studio.word up son
@Bleachedsmiles This I can say for sure: It is not visually impressive at all. Not saying bad but certainly nowhere near eye candy. I bet people on Twitter will call the graphics trash, lol. There's quite a bit of jank in the game visually. Someone is live-streaming it on Youtube right now. Maybe you can get a quick glimpse from the beginning by rewinding to get an impression.
personally, i think it looks and plays exactly like i thought it would a new dead space game
which is exactly what i wanted
"loaning out its state-of-the-art motion capture studios"
They definitely charge for this 😅
I dont judge games on if its the best thing ive ever seen i judge them on if its a good game. lots of great looking games turn out to be rubbish and lots of terrible looking games turn out to be great
dont judge a book by its cover
@dschons fake news, I'll wait to play it when the game is actually out. Thanks
@bbauer36 Have fun!
Ain't preordering from the store till I've read many reviews just to be on the safe side. Very much looking forward to it still. Hopefully the review embargo ends tomorrow
Edit review embargo ends Friday release day. Waiting till Friday evening or Saturday on decision for this one
Sure the game is a bit overhyped..hope it delivers but I expect something around 7.5-8.0 review scores.
I was concerned once it was mentioned the review embargo lifts on release day, tends not to be a good sign.
I nearly pre ordered a while back, glad I held off. I'm still interested in the game but will probably pick it up in the new year once it has been patched a bit.
Cinematics are stunning... and hidden behind paywall of season pass... thanx, not interested.
@dschons there supposed to be a hefty day 1 patch so maybe that will fix the things that bother a bit.
@PCPS4XB I had that installed when I wrote it.
Looking forward to it. Roll on Friday.
Striking Distance Studios: "Help me, somebody please!!!"
Sony: "no worries, cavalry has arrived"
@djlard I guess those 150 spartans assigned to the project were the ones with the higher salaries, therefore paywall.
@djlard no offense , but maybe you should actually read more into that. i'm guessing you didn't read beyond the title of the article. the " kill Cinematics " are tied into dlc area with dlc mobs.
Really hope this reviews positively. 7 or above and I'm in
@dschons Don't know why you think that,I'm about 2 hours in and loving it,polished and smooth in every aspect so far,can only see it getting better when I play it again tomorrow
@dschons Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your Callisto Protocol playthrough!
Seems like I made the right choice holding off on buying it at full price.
@dschons So how exactly are you receiving your copy when it’s only at presale right now? I’m calling full bullcocka. Unless you’re a official high profile game reviewer and not just some nameless dude who lives in his moms basement?
Gloating aside, Sammy, on the wonders of Sony, it'll run just as well on Xbox, which is where I'll eventually be playing it.
@Danibee12 the game is out in 2 days, early copies are everywhere, and retailers always break the embargo for physical releases every time as it's a logistical nightmare. So no you don't have to be a "high profile gamer" for Shopto or Amazon to send the game early.
@KidBoruto I've played another hour of it yesterday. I am enjoying it for sure. I just don't think it's as AAA as people expected it to be. The game is brutal and unforgiving.
@djlard You mean the animations tied to new enemies you face in DLC missions something that's pretty common with any new enemy type.
@Danibee12 Almost like some places are braking street date and some people are getting pre-orders early like my brother has whose currently playing it as i type this.
Got this pre ordered, but been busy last few weeks and was ill for about 3 weeks before that, so havent played much in last month and bit, only played about 5hrs of god of war so far hopefully put a dent in it this weekend. So this will probably my xmas game along with gotham knights which i got free with my points from the game collection today, so if i dont like gotham can just sell it lol.
Y'all think this studio gonna join the ps family too?
@dschons there's another 10gb patch so technically you didn't have the day one patch installed
@Would_you_kindly I guess this won't be the last patch. However, I'm about half way through now and I didn't have any major issues aside from one instance where the game crashed. It was never unplayable, just a little rough here and there and minor stuff like enemies clipping and such.
@dschons I'm playing it now the graphics look great for the most part I really don't like the dodge mechanic though feels like it's really hit or miss on weather he'll actually dodge or not when you move the stick
@Would_you_kindly One advice I can give you which cost me a few lives in the opening hours: Press and hold the dodge way ahead of time. I treated it a bit "soulslike" first when I tried to find the perfect timing for a doge. This will only complicate things. Once that clicked, it got easier and as the review also mentioned, the game gets way easier as you go.
@dschons Did you finish the game?
What are your final thoughts, if you don't mind sharing?
@Dr-M Yeah, I did. I think it is a good game. Nothing more, nothing less. I also think it is shat on too much, probably due to most peoples expectations. Combat was the star for me, it had a real sense of weight to it. Also, the presentation is great. However, some sections were poorly designed, throwing enemies at you in situations where you basically have no chance as the dodging only really works in 1 v 1.
@dschons Thank You so much for answering and sharing your thoughts.
I made up my mind to buy it down the line.
